How to Use Daily Standups to Grow Your Company

Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of assessing and advising a number of 7-figure companies. Despite the fact that they’ve achieved a level of success that puts them well ahead of the “shoestring startup,” many of these organizations struggle to take their operations (and revenues) to the next level.

What I’ve discovered is that, in almost all cases, communication in leadership and sales environments is grossly inefficient – and it leads to chronic problems that hold back the organization.

Typically, meetings are infrequent and unstructured. Sales team members in particular tend to avoid them because they view them as a “waste of time.” Instead, communication is handled through emails and “on the fly” discussions that aren’t shared with the rest of the team.

This is why the Daily Standup, when coupled with other innovative strategies (such as those inside Vitalization’s ProSales framework) can have such an enormous impact on an organization’s success.

How Can Your Company Benefit from Daily Standups?

The idea of daily team prep is a powerful one. In this article that originally appeared on LinkedIn, Jeff Sutherland shows how New Zealand Rugby team The All Blacks used this approach to prepare mentally and emotionally for each game.

The three questions that serve as the backbone of the Daily Standup are simple but powerful:

  1. What did I accomplish yesterday?
  2. What will I do today?
  3. What are the obstacles impeding my progress?

Focusing on these three questions creates a no-nonsense meeting experience where team members can quickly address critical issues without wasting time on discussions better left for another time.

Through incorporating Daily Standups into our clients’ growth strategies along with assessments, sales process maps, and other key strategies, we’ve identified several key benefits:

  • Team members are better able to identify their challenges (allowing them to generate more powerful solutions).
  • Accountability is dramatically increased, which translates to better follow-through.
  • Prospects and clients benefit from a better sales experience, so they buy more and stay longer.
  • Sales team members overcome the sense of isolation and hyper-competitiveness that traditional sales strategies foster.

How Can You Implement Daily Standups in Your Organization?

We’ve created an article that outlines the approach and strategies of the Daily Standup, allowing you to implement your first meeting quickly and easily.

We’d love to hear about your experiences with scrum and Daily Standups outside of software development. After you read the article, feel free to leave a comment and tell us what you think.
